Stress, Anxiety, Computers, Children, Bad diets and sedentary jobs all drain your energy.
If you want more then you need to make some changes to the way you live.
As well as identifying what's draining your energy, It's useful to find ways of generating and preserving it. Anything you can do to become more relaxed will help as anxiety is perhaps the biggest drain. If you can learn to relax, you will sleep better and as a result will feel better.
If you enjoy feeling sluggish, however, here are some tips to help you lose energy and maintain a state of sublime lethargy.
⦁ Stare at screens. Social media helps to increase anxiety, as does any obsessive and excessive use of your phone or tablet. Do I need to find scientific proof or does your own experience confirm this?
⦁ Go to bed late. You need around 8 hours of sleep to fully recharge and unpack all the events of the day. This is the most obvious thing to say but many people don't do it.
⦁ Eat meat. Meat requires a lot of digestion and consuming it often will make you feel tired. Think about Christmas day and how you feel after all the turkey, sausages, bacon and stuffing. When I stopped eating meat my energy levels increased and I no longer feel quite as lethargic on Christmas day!
⦁ Think negative thoughts. The way you think affects the way that you feel. Your subconscious mind can't tell the difference between thoughts and reality. Try and notice the quality of your thoughts and observe them preceding feelings of stress and anxiety.
If you want to feel more vigour and full of life, you can try the following to increase your energy levels.
⦁ Eat Beetroot. The consumption of raw beetroot has been shown to significantly boost athletic performance.
⦁ Go to bed before 12. This piece of advice changed my life.
⦁ Cold showers. Not a popular one but it really works! Cold showers lower the stress hormone cortisol and leave you feeling both calm and energised.
⦁ Meditate. Meditation will calm you down and also increase your bodily awareness. After my first ever meditation session I gave up Coffee as I could suddenly feel that it was ramping up my anxiety levels.
⦁ Cordyceps. Put some Cordycep mushroom powder in your morning smoothie and it will noticeably increase your stamina and endurance.
⦁ Move more. Get a standing desk if you have a sit down job and take frequent breaks to move!
⦁ Tai Chi. Tai Chi will help more than anything else. It will calm you down, increase your awareness and help you sleep much better. Any exercise will help to an extent but Tai Chi is by far the best. The better you get, the more energy you will cultivate and the stronger and healthier you will become. I'm running a 4 week online introduction to Chen style Tai Chi starting June 1st. If you're interested, you can learn more here
As the father of a brand new baby, I now have a wonderful new little energy sapper in my life and so now I'm really appreciating the results of my daily routine. I honestly have no way of knowing how I'd feel without the Tai Chi and the dietary tweaks but I suspect a lot more tired! I'm up at 5:30 these days practicing before the rest of the household awakes which probably sounds nuts but then I do go to bed around 9.
